Hack, hack.
Grumble, grumble.
It’s cold, wet and soggy in our little corner of south London.
And we seem to have been battling sore throats all winter.
Not full on go to bed flu, just background grottiness. It’s a combination of run down immunity and the traffic pollution which has got horrid in London. (What’s it like round you?)
But the pollution ain’t going anywhere fast, so we’ve been dosing up on this good old fashioned, totally natural cough mixture you can whip up yourself in no time and keep in the fridge.
This cough mixture really is easy to make and doesn’t have any of the nasties that come with OTC cough medicines for kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned most are ineffective and unsuitable for kids.
And recent research has shown the ingredients in this traditional cough mixture are the most effective way to treat initial and minor cough symptoms. So do give it a go when your through is sore and dry.

Natural Cough Mixture Ingredients
All you need is a lemon, runny honey and a bottle of glycerin.
Glycerin’s a brilliant natural remedy for everything from broken nails to hard heels. AND it’s the secret ingredient in those super sized bubbles you see street entertainers blowing! Who knew?
You can get it over the counter at a chemist or pharmacy.
But the key is really the honey and lemon which both have natural antiseptic and antibiotic powers. The honey has been shown to be the most effective ingredient available to sooth the throat and prevent persistent coughing. (N.B. Honey should not be given to babies.)
Making Nature Cough Mixture
To make the cough mixture, just squeeze out your lemon and pour the juice into a jar.
Then add equal parts of runny honey and glycerin, i.e. add as much of each as you got juice out of your lemon. Heat it very slightly over a pan of water or in the microwave. And mix it all up.
And there you go! Instant sore throat relief.
It will keep in the fridge, but I tend just to make small amounts as we need it.
For even more relief you can add some of these other proven naturally antibiotic herbs you’ve probably got in your kitchen. If you add more lemon juice you can blend them in to the mixture.
I do hope it works for you. Don’t forget to save it for later …
