There’s SO much in our lives to stop us sleeping better.
Isn’t there?
Work stress, parenting, financial worries, family conflicts, illness, grief.
And even though we crave the peace of a good night’s sleep.
There are then so many stupid ways we sabotage it every night.
Caffeine. Sugar. Alcohol. Binge watching shows.
Our stupid phones we can’t put down.
Just NOT going to bed!
We long for some magic-pill remedy to help us sleep better.
Though, we know deep down no promise-all sleep remedy will solve our big problems.
Or help us ditch our sleep sabotaging habits.
BUT there are a few really suprising simple tips that can help us sleep better.
And they work because they gently build our strength to tackle the big stuff.
AND ease out our why-on-earth-I-am-doing-this destructive habits.
So what are they?
Nothing new. Nothing magical.
Just long forgotten natural rhythms that help our bodies and minds sleep better.
BUT the big secret is they are ALL about what we do during the day.
NOT what we do at bed time.
So here you go, 6 simple tips that truly can help you sleep better. Easily.
6 Simple Tips To Sleep Better
1. Get Outside First Thing
The first tip is SO simple. But SO powerful.
Just get outside first thing. Even in winter.
And get daylight. As much as you can.
It instantly sets our circadian rhythm.
Which is how every other animal and plant on the planet knows when to sleep!
It works for them. And it CAN for us. If we give it a chance.
2. Drink 3 Glasses Of Water First Thing
The second sleep tip is again crazily simple.
But drinking 3 glasses of cold water when you get up helps.
Lots.
Because it kick starts our metabolism.
And releases the energy we need to start the day.
WITHOUT caffeine OR sugar!
It doesn’t mean we have to ditch our morning coffee.
But it does reduce the caffeine dependency which stops us sleeping.
And help to cut our sugar cravings.
3. Eat Nuts Everyday
The third sleep tip is yet another super simple one.
We basically need a whole bunch of minerals and vitamins to sleep well.
Especially magnesium, calcium and the full whack of b vitamins.
The easiest, effective way to get these is a handful of mixed nuts.
As a quick snack on the go.
Or chucked on cereal or salad. Or blended in smoothies or soup.
And nuts beat multi-vitamin tablets hands down.
Because their essential goodies that help us sleep are actually absorbed better.
4. Walk Everywhere
OK on to sleep tip number 4.
Now, we often hear that exercise helps us sleep.
And it can.
BUT intensive exercise can also raise adrenalin levels.
And with our non-stop lives and stupid phone addictions, we’re all maxed out on it!
And our adrenalin levels are a big reason why switching off at bed time is SO hard.
Walking, on the other hand, is great cardio exercise.
BUT stabilises and lowers those adrenalin spikes.
AND – it’s been shown – actually reduces stress and anxiety.
So just do what our ancestors did.
And walk everywhere!
5. Keep A Mini Journal
OK this next sleep better tip takes a tiny bit more effort.
But we’re still talking easy-peasy.
Just spend a few minutes daily to write down notes on your day.
It’s not a diary.
It’s not a fancy-pancy bullet journal.
Just a few minutes of free flow writing.
Some days more. Some days less.
Writing whatever comes to mind.
Without trying to capture every detail.
You can make it part of your bedtime routine.
But feel free to do it whenever during the day.
Writing the mini journal can help us sleep better because it helps us let go of all those churning thoughts in our head.
And it turns out, letting go is key to sleeping better.
6. Let Go Of A Little Everyday
In today’s world we are all bombarded.
By stuff, experiences AND communication.
We just don’t have time to enjoy the good things.
Or process any of it.
So we end up clinging onto all the clutter.
Physical stuff. Emails. Photos. Paperwork.
We hold onto it for dear life.
Until our homes and minds are bursting with it.
And we can’t even let go enough to let our brains switch off, to sleep.
It’s NOT meant to be like this.
Time passes. Our lives move on.
We have to let go little by little of as much as we can.
IF we are ever to enjoy the peace of a good night’s sleep.
That might all seem very philosophical.
But we can make it real.
Just declutter 10 little things everyday.
The more we do it, the easier it becomes to let go.
The more little things we let go.
The better we are able to focus on the big stuff.
And very simply, the better we are able to sleep.
I do so hope these simple sleep tips help you get a good night’s rest.
Let me know how you get on.
